Crowdfunding Madness? Not so with 10 Days in a Madhouse

Madness you say?

The very idea of crowdfunding is not so crazy these days. We can all join Nellie Bly and the team behind 10 Days in a Madhouse as inmates and break out of the traditional ways of raising funds to finance films with female protagonists!

We've added fun new perks such as a postcard signed by the stars or getting a picture of yourself hanging on a wall in the movie to make the crowdfunding campaign more interactive with our audience.

On the other hand, our star search might just be a little more out there, but still. revolutionary and attracting great talent.

From Mars to the Madhouse

The award-winning team from War of the Worlds: The True Story is at it again, this time showcasing Nellie Bly’s experience of willingly getting herself committed to an infamous insane asylum to expose the abuse, neglect and other atrocities common in the American mental health industry. Their labor of love has already begun with an ambitious campaign to finance the movie through the crowd-funding platform Indiegogo while handling pre-production.

But the team has already shown they are willing to go all-out to produce a world class movie. People’s hidden agendas, the attacks on 9/11 and the untimely release of Steven Spielberg’s version of the story resulted in production for War of the Worlds The True Story, now available in DVD and on demand after competing in the 85 Academy Awards, taking years from start to finish. Few moviemakers have such stamina to guide a production to port through so many obstacles and succeed with a critically acclaimed movie.

You Won Cannes critic, Shawn Francis, became interested after seeing just a teaser of the film on the internet, “What ever it was, it intrigued me on visual merit alone.” After seeing the entire film he elaborated, “Ever since the 1953 movie adaptation of War Of The Worlds there have been numerous other translations of Wells’ novel, even a 1988 short lived TV series, but of all the ones I have seen the only two-yes, only two-I find worthy of repeated viewings is the ’53 film and this new 2013 docudrama.”

Other critics agree the results of their labor of love were breath-taking. Apocalypse Later critic, Hal C F Astell described his viewing experience as, “one of the most fascinating cinematic experiences I’ve encountered.”
The team is bringing the lessons learned on their last major project and their innovative nature to produce 10 Days in a Madhouse. The entire film, from casting to location to scenery and props, is being undertaken with even more care and attention to detail. Running the Indiegogo campaign while meticulously arranging for the fall production of the movie is a unique challenge.

Although film makers are putting their own funds towards production costs, “we are depending on public support to tell Nellie’s story as it should be told,” explained producer Susan Goforth.

pre-production heats up for 10 Days in a Madhouse

As the Indiegogo campaign heats up, behind the scenes, pre-production is moving developing in a healthy manner. World class costumers and set designers/artists and technicians are signing on every day and are brewing plans for this most astounding material. We've learned a lot doing period productions like WAR OF THE WORLDS THE TRUE STORY and 10 DAYS IN A MADHOUSE will reap the benefits of that experience. There is much source material and surprisingly much photographic evidence to draw on in order to accurately recreate the environment. With the help and support of passionate individuals who contribute to our Indiegogo campaign, we will shoot the movie, not in a rush, but with the proper time to get the human interactions, character motives and emotional responses right. With a call to the professional acting world, we are drawing the best acting submissions imaginable and will have an excellent cast. Thanks to those who have contributed and if you haven't, don't delay. Contribute now and get some of the great perks we are offering. And be sure to tell absolutely everyone. Thanks - Timothy Hines

Innovation breeds innovation. Producers knew they didn’t want to make 10 Days in a Madhouse like any other movie. A movie detailing the true story of a women who changed the world with her innovation deserves to be made with twists as unique as Nellie Bly herself.

“In the 1880s, she pioneered the development of “detective” or “stunt” journalism,” explains author Brooke Kroeger. Nellie pioneered undercover investigative reporting for Pulitzer’s The World newspaper by fearlessly getting herself declared insane so she could expose rape, murder, neglect and other atrocities at the infamous Blackwell’s Island Insane Asylum.

n Nellie’s highly innovative spirit, producers are introducing a potential game changer to how movies are cast. Rather than hold traditional auditions, they are holding a worldwide star search online. “Everyone has seen American Idol and America’s got Talent. We are doing a version of that with the casting of our movie,” explains producer Susan Goforth. Anyone can upload a video to their dedicated Youtube channel by September 27th. The director and producers will choose their top 50 applicants which the world will then vote on. Google and YouTube are very excited about the innovative new approach and are building a framework to host the competition.

“Far from being a stunt,” says director Timothy Hines. “A worldwide star search is an extremely good way to choose the lead in our movie. At the final stage, the world will decide who they respond to the strongest. Nellie Bly had a charisma that everyone acknowledged. Her spirit was infectious and that’s the kind of actress we need to fill her shoes.” The star search has already gained traction with numerous well-known actresses already stating they will audition and some major corporations are in talks with the producers to sponsor it.

“This is the first ever movie cast by a worldwide internet star search. The people at Google see the potential and that is why they are building the framework and providing support,” explains producer Jesse Zesbaugh, who is leading the star search campaign. But the innovation does not end there. The producers are also seeking to fund the movie with a unique mix of public funding and select corporate sponsorships. The opportunity to help produce 10 Days in a Madhouse came at a rough time. Already juggling leadership roles in two start-up corporations, I wondered if I could possibly manage another project. But once I heard Nellie's story, it wasn't an IF but a HOW. As a journalists engaged in social activism in an industry dominated by men, I could relate to Nellie. Her ability to play by the rules in a world dominated by men and beat them at their own game gave me inspiration that I too could succeed in a heavily male-dominated industry. At just age 23, she fearlessly took on an assignment no man was brave enough - or perhaps foolish enough - to take. And in doing so, she not only secured herself a position working for the all powerful Joseph Pulitzer, but inspired the American public to finally demand accountability for the systematic abuses in the American Mental Health Industry. She was a powerful activist, one of the first female industrialists, and a humanitarian to the core. How could I not join the award-winning team inviting the public to help us tell her story right through our Indiegogo campaign. http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/10-days-in-a-madhouse-suspense-thriller-dramatic-feature-film/x/4589818
